Obituary for Max Martinez

Return to Memorial Post Condolences

Maximino N. Martinez

The dearest, sweetest father, husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, in-law and friend anyone could ever have, has lovingly passed on.

Max left us on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 1:05 pm.  He struggled valiantly with Alzheimer’s for many years and now has found peace and comfort, free from pain.  We all will miss his gentle sweetness, generous heart and loving humor and stories.  We are comforted knowing he was so deeply loved and adored by all who remember him.

Max was born February 3, 1929 in Santa Barbara, CA to Luz and Maximino Martinez.  He attended Santa Barbara Jr. High, SB High School, Class of 1954 and SB City College.  He worked for 25 years as the Store Manager at the Milpas Rexall Drugs Store and then in 1967, transferred to Isla Vista Rexall Drugs for another 20 years of service.  Throughout his life, Max was the pillar of the family.  Always willing to help and provide for others.  His ambassadorial deeds were to instill the importance of the family harmony, family unit, and to maintain the connection from Mexico to the US with our heritage, culture and family.  Truly bilingual, he was able to assist many families in good times and in bad.  Max became the patriarch of the Martinez Family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Ruben, Eleazar, Xavier, and sister, Alicia Banales.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Soledad O. Martinez.  She provided the compassion, dedication and loving care throughout their years together.   Max leaves behind four children, Cynthia Sanchez, Steven, Sandra Rubio, and Sonya Cathcart and their spouses Andres Sanchez, Patricia Martinez, Dino Rubio, and Jim Cathcart; and nine beautiful grandchildren: Andy, Jacklyn, Jesenia, Sharlene, Elia, Dina, Jason, Michelle and Amber.  He also has one surviving brother Isaias and sister, Lucy Martinez.

“Grandpa Max/Uncle Max/Tio Mino” you will be missed by countless family members and friends.  A Funeral Mass and service will be held on Monday, December 21st, 2009 at 9:00 am. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 21 E. Sola St. with a burial service following at Calvary Cemetery, 199 N. Hope Ave.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapels.

As an expression of love and sympathy, and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care of Santa Barbara or to the Alzheimer’s Association.  The family would like to thank the dedicated caregivers and staff of VNA and Hospice for their support during the past four months.

Max was 80 years old and will be greatly missed by a multitude of friends and family.  We will forever carry his love in our hearts for he has left an imprint, and his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of many who are freer, healthier, and more prosperous because of his efforts. We love you and are truly grateful for everything that you did in your blessed life.  We, one day, will return home to be with our Lord and reunite with you again.
