Early morning January 17, the worst fears of the students of Westmar were, for the fourth time in the part year, happening before their very eyes. At approximately 7:30 Wednesday morning, sophmore Brittany Paton and junior Adam Dyer were involved in a two-vehicle accident that claimed Brittany's life on route 36.

The reason why the Ford LTD operated by Adam crossed the center line that morning is still unknown. But mystery aside, fate would have its way. Traffic was backed up for more than three hours along the highway where Westmar students on the way to school helplessly watched as ambulances sped past them towards an accident they could not see. Soon after, the sound of a helicopter was heard overhead as the medavac was called in. Both were transported to Memorial Hospital where Brittany was pronounced dead on arrival. Adam was transported by Medavac to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center after being treated at Memorial. The driver of the second vehicle, a 2000 Dodge Ram, was treated for minor injuries, and released.

Brittany and Adam were a well-known couple in the halls of Westmar. Walking into school Wednesday morning offered a dismal scene, which has become all to familiar to the students. Once again, students and faculty were signing a good bye message board by the guidance office, and once again Westmar begins the process of healing and rebuilding.
